Why multiple gun barrels may regain value

Removing defensive layers and relying on single barrels can leave a ship short of fire during a saturated attack.

Notes

Layered air defence becomes fragile when planners treat its components like removable pieces in a Jenga tower. A prolonged peer conflict could expose the resulting weakness in single-barrel weapon fits. Warships have only a limited number of useful mounting positions, so more barrels at each position can put more shells into a short defensive window. The Type 31 thought experiment combines a twin 57 mm mount with twin 40 mm mounts, accepting extra maintenance for greater firepower at the critical moment. The proposal makes maintenance burden and defensive output an explicit design trade.
