Multi-axis space combat requires wider firing arcs

Planets, asteroids, gas clouds, and Warp transitions make attacks from several directions more plausible than a flat game map suggests.

Notes

A bounded computer-game map permits tactics that may fail in three-dimensional space. In open space a fleet may detect an approaching enemy at long range, but planetary bodies, asteroid fields, and gas clouds complicate that geometry. Emergence from the Warp adds another opportunity for forces to appear on an unexpected axis. A fleet designed for that environment would benefit from weapons covering several directions instead of assuming that every threat will remain broadside-on.
