As Emden left Penang, the French destroyer Mousquet returned from patrol and unexpectedly encountered the German cruiser. Penang's older French cruiser and another destroyer had already fired inaccurately enough that Emden could largely ignore them. Mousquet was a small, crowded early torpedo-boat destroyer with no protection capable of resisting concentrated cruiser gunfire. The encounter ended quickly and with heavy French casualties, extending the raid beyond the destruction of Zhemchug and showing the tactical cost of fragmented harbor defense.
