Mountbatten pink as naval camouflage

The distinctive pink paint is traced from HMS Kelly to wider wartime experiments intended to hide ships in haze.

Question

What was Mountbatten pink?

Short answer

A wartime pink camouflage intended to blend ships into haze, effective in some light conditions but conspicuous at midday.

Notes

Mountbatten pink began with Lord Mountbatten's experiment aboard the destroyer leader HMS Kelly. The color could make a ship difficult to distinguish around dawn, dusk, and hazy conditions. Its weakness was full daylight, when the same pink hull became much more conspicuous. HMS Kenya, aircraft, and Special Air Service vehicles illustrate how widely the idea was tried.
