The Mountain and Arctic Warfare Cadre was a training organization with a defined wartime role in deep reconnaissance. Its field skills placed it close to special-forces standards in that specialized mission. During the Falklands campaign, cadre personnel undertook work that later accounts have sometimes attributed to the SAS or SBS. They also provided the kind of support to special operations later supplied by specialist groups drawn from the Paras and Royal Marines. Correct attribution shows how 3 Commando Brigade generated reconnaissance capability from within its own organization.
