How mount layout and destroyer size affect calibre

Single or multi-barrel mounts suggest different attack patterns, while larger destroyers make six-inch fire increasingly attractive.

Notes

Mount arrangement adds another clue about expected combat. Numerous single guns suit attacks arriving from several directions, while multi-barrel mounts concentrate a dense blanket of fire into threatened arcs. A shared aiming error can still send every barrel wide. For an all-forward design built around a destroyer threat, many multi-barrel four-inch mounts made sense. Target growth changes the balance: a four-inch weapon may suffice against a 500-ton torpedo boat, while a 1,500-ton destroyer or a 4,000- to 5,000-ton light cruiser makes six-inch fire more attractive. The choice depends on attack geometry, target resilience, and fleet context.
