Twin pom-poms versus the Mosquito's six-pounder

The proposed pom-pom swap leads to disagreement over rocket loads, gun endurance, and the value of retaining 20 mm cannon.

Question

Would replacing the Mosquito's Molins six-pounder with twin two-pounder pom-poms firing armor-piercing tracer improve Coastal Command operations?

Short answer

Foxo favors RP-3 rockets and 20 mm cannon; other participants defend a heavier gun's ammunition capacity and the option of further attacks after the rockets are spent.

Notes

The proposed twin pom-poms fire armor-piercing tracer in place of the Molins six-pounder. Their advocate compares three or four six-pounder shots during a dive with eight to ten 40 mm shots. Foxo considers the change unattractive once RP-3 rockets can attack U-boats and small surface craft. Other participants point out that rocket ammunition is limited and that a gun can support further attacks after the rockets are expended. Firing rockets sheds most of their carried weight, whereas the aircraft retains an empty internal gun. The six-pounder installation is also said to require removal of the four 20 mm cannon. Larger rocket loads of sixteen to twenty-four are raised, then qualified by the distinction between early single racks and later doubled arrangements. The disagreement therefore includes attack endurance, retained cannon, and which period's rocket equipment the comparison assumes.
