Moskva lacked the partner and redundancy a picket needs

Deploying Moskva alone removed mutual sensor support and left a high-value picket dependent on its own aging systems.

Notes

Lessons from World War II and the Falklands favored deploying exposed pickets in pairs or within a larger group. Moskva instead operated without a frigate partner that could share sensors, weapons, and backup functions. A picket also needs current equipment and several different self-defense methods - missiles, guns, and potentially lasers - because redundancy within one system is not enough when the ship is deliberately placed in danger. The loss illustrates how a powerful cruiser becomes less effective when doctrine, maintenance, and mutual support do not match its exposed assignment.
