Mort's Dock at Balmain combined Sydney's original dry dock with slipways and engineering facilities. The dry dock had been lengthened to 640 feet in 1898. Although the site did not normally build or launch ships, its existing engineering capacity made it useful for wartime corvette construction. Deloraine was one product of that conversion and commissioned on 22 November 1941. Her construction illustrates how an established repair and engineering site could contribute to an emergency building program.
