Historians are often described as doomed to watch people repeat past mistakes because people may assume that more information and better technology make them smarter. A smartphone now lets one person record a video that 60 or 70 years ago would have required a camera crew and additional equipment. That change brings more capability and knowledge without making the user more intelligent or wise. Technical progress therefore does not prove that present-day judgment has improved.

Technology does not make people wiser
A smartphone can replace the crew and equipment needed for filming 60 or 70 years ago, yet greater technical capability and access to information do not make its user wiser.
