HMS Moonstone captured Galileo Galilei after a gun duel

Battery damage forced Galileo Galilei to the surface, where the converted trawler Moonstone proved the steadier gun platform.

Notes

Depth-charge damage allowed dangerous gases to accumulate from Galileo Galilei's batteries, pushing the submarine toward a surface engagement. Although the Italian boat carried heavier armament, its unstable hull made accurate gunfire difficult and its crew reloaded slowly. HMS Moonstone, the converted trawler formerly named Lady Madeline, could close and shoot from a much steadier platform, eventually compelling the submarine to surrender. Kandahar then took over the tow because even the relatively calm sea challenged the smaller Moonstone.
