Chapter ยท 51:29-55:38

HMS Monarch in Rodney's Moonlight Battle

Duncan's fast, hard-fighting Monarch distinguished herself during Rodney's 1780 victory off Cape St Vincent.

Notes

The earlier Battle of Cape St Vincent, often called the Moonlight Battle, followed Rodney's relief of Gibraltar. Rodney first displayed his full strength and then ordered a general chase designed to cut the Spanish squadron off from port. Monarch exchanged broadsides with several Spanish ships and suffered a comparatively high total of killed and wounded. Her speed under Duncan became a lasting point of pride that he later used to tease her Camperdown commander into driving the ship harder.
