Monobloc casting capped the century of gun-centred development

A closing clarification explains how centrifugal casting sought a uniform monobloc barrel and why industrial advances converged around the gun as the warship's primary system.

Notes

Centrifugal spinning aimed to cast a pure, uniform monobloc barrel with the desired taper. Built-up and wire-wound methods had partly compensated for limitations in metal quality and in the processes used to construct a large barrel. As casting, metallurgy, and manufacturing improved, those layers of development came together in a different production method. Guns were the primary action system of these warships, so much of the ship and its industrial support was developed around them.
