Knowing USS Monitor does not explain the later monitor as a warship type. The name survived because navies continued to need shallow-draught vessels able to carry disproportionately heavy guns near a hostile coast. Roberts and Abercrombie belong to a long technical and operational lineage rather than an isolated Civil War curiosity. This introduction explains why that specialized type still made sense in the 1940s.
