Zeebrugge and attacking submarines at their base

Erebus and Terror supported the Zeebrugge Raid, an effort to limit U-boat operations by striking the harbour infrastructure rather than submarines at sea.

Notes

Both monitors supplied long-range bombardment during the Zeebrugge Raid, supporting the attempt to block the canal used by German U-boats. The blockships were sunk in the wrong positions, the obstruction lasted only a few days, and submarines continued to pass through at a significant rate. The episode nevertheless uses the raid to frame the broader anti-submarine logic: attacking a weapon system at its source can be more effective than trying to defeat every unit once deployed. Zeebrugge is therefore a reminder that a sound operational idea can still fall short through execution and local circumstances.
