Why monitors sacrifice speed for guns

The monitor concept combines shallow draught with outsized guns, deliberately trading speed for firepower and protection near the shore.

Notes

Monitor design pushes the armour, speed, and firepower balance toward protection and heavy guns. A shallow-draught hull can work close to shore and carry the largest weapon its structure will bear. Moving that broad, heavily loaded hull quickly would require very expensive machinery. The design accepts low speed so it can deliver sustained bombardment and withstand damage near the coast.
