Chapter ยท 11:29-13:15

Mongol diplomacy seeks a western alliance for the Holy Land

Mongol embassies propose coordinated action against the Mamluks, but sympathetic European courts offer no firm armies or timetable.

Notes

Arghun's envoys travel among papal, French, and English courts seeking practical support for the threatened crusader states. They receive elaborate welcomes and sympathetic hearings, but no ruler supplies a definite force or timetable. A later proposal offers twenty to thirty thousand Mongol horsemen for a coordinated advance toward Damascus and promises to return the Holy Places if western armies join. Even that specific plan produces no binding commitment, and repeated embassies fail before Arghun's death. The embassies travel widely, but they cannot turn sympathy into coalition warfare after European crusading enthusiasm has faded.
