Protection arrives before merchant opposition hardens

An 1824 guarantee strengthens the Hawaiian monarchy before wealthy foreign merchants form the later anti-monarchist power base.

Notes

British protection would leave Hawaii's active internal politics in place. The guarantee arrives while the monarchist faction remains secure and before the later anti-monarchist coalition has fully formed. Many members of that opposition were merchants from abroad with substantial financial influence. External protection would not settle disputes over royal conduct, but it would give the political system an additional source of continuity. Early British involvement would therefore change the conditions in which commercial opposition and constitutional conflict developed.
