Monarch's hull proportions and the uncertainty in length-to-beam ratios

Estimates differ slightly for Monarch's length-to-beam ratio, while her fine hull favoured efficient use of engine power.

Notes

Monarch's length-to-beam ratio lay roughly between 5.5 and six to one, giving her unusually fine hull proportions for the period. One calculation gives 5.55, alongside published or personal estimates of 5.7 and 5.65. Including the ram bow in the measured length is one possible reason for the difference. Hull proportions affect resistance and how effectively engine power produces speed, although a fine hull is not necessarily easy to manoeuvre. Dreadnought's later ratio of roughly six to one provides a comparison with later battleship designs.
