Three seven-inch guns supplemented Monarch's main battery, later giving way to two nine-inch guns and one seven-inch gun. Her belt was about seven inches thick amidships and 4.5 inches towards the ends, while the turrets had ten-inch faces and eight-inch sides. Bulkheads were four to 4.5 inches thick, battle screens five inches, and the conning tower eight inches. New triple-expansion engines and boilers in an 1890 modernisation raised her powered speed from roughly 15 knots to nearly 15.75 knots, compared with about 13 knots under sail. The refit left the existing armour in place because replacing it was considered impractical. Twelve-pounder and three-pounder guns addressed the newer torpedo-boat threat.
