Momi's range, machinery and later escort use

Momi's stated 3,000-nautical-mile cruising range raises a Pacific endurance problem, while later conversions show a different use for the hulls.

Notes

Momi combined a stated maximum speed of 36 knots with a cruising range of 3,000 nautical miles at 15 knots. That endurance is judged more suitable for confined waters than for long Pacific operations. The class tested different turbine arrangements, including Brown-Curtis, Parsons and Mitsubishi machinery. By 1939, patrol and escort conversions included removal of a boiler and torpedo equipment, with depth charges and antiaircraft weapons among the replacement fittings.
