A modified Trieste LHD for Royal Navy amphibious aviation

Three ski-jump-equipped Trieste derivatives could replace Ocean, Albion, and Bulwark while backing up the carriers.

Question

Would a modified Trieste-class LHD be a good replacement for HMS Ocean?

Short answer

Yes; three ski-jump-equipped derivatives could replace Ocean, Albion, and Bulwark while providing amphibious lift and limited carrier backup.

Notes

The proposal combines aviation and well-dock capacity in three modified Trieste-class landing helicopter docks. A ski jump would let each ship operate a limited fixed-wing group as well as helicopters and landing craft. Paired with new logistic ships, the LHDs could anchor balanced northern and southern littoral groups and support brigade-scale operations. The third group would provide a reduced carrier capability when both Queen Elizabeth-class carriers are unavailable, or add capacity during a larger crisis.
