Older destroyers such as the Tribals did not carry the mass of computers found aboard a modern warship. Contemporary sensors, weapons, and command systems need their own computing and support equipment. Much of that machinery exists to keep the ship's other functions available. A displacement comparison across eras therefore has to account for systems that earlier ships never needed.
