How many armoured or Essex-class carriers would equal a Queen Elizabeth, Nimitz, or Ford?
Short answerWith air groups, enough to exhaust the modern force's missiles; modern sensors and F-35s otherwise make the old carriers noncompetitive.
NotesWith air groups included, F-35s can detect and strike wartime carriers beyond the reach of their defenses. The older fleet would need enough hulls simply to exhaust modern missile inventories. Their numbers, guns, and armour do not solve the sensor and reach problem. Without aircraft, the artificial comparison reverses because armoured carriers retain heavy guns and protection against unarmed modern hulls.
