Modern warships still need stern defence

A brief comparison with modern close-in weapons systems explains why rearward coverage and redundancy matter in warship design.

Notes

The closing comparison connects the fictional criticism to a real warship-design problem. Modern ships with stern hangars still need close-in weapon coverage aft because attacks may arrive from that direction. One layout places a system at each end of the ship, while another mounts one on either beam. Beam mounts can cover astern after a slight turn and let the working weapon take over if its partner fails. An end-on arrangement loses its dedicated aft defence when the stern mount breaks down, which exposes the tradeoff between direct coverage and redundancy.
