A smaller escort fleet would not reproduce the 1982 task force in the same form, although the Royal Navy would still deploy if ordered. The islands now have a stronger garrison, a more capable local defence force, and better British support, reducing the chance that a recapture operation would be necessary. Deterrence still depends on the local capacity to resist an attack and the wider capacity to reinforce or retake the territory. The resident offshore patrol vessel provides visible presence without being an immediate offensive threat, while the wider fleet supplies the implied weight behind it. Together, they allow the patrol ship to deter without presenting the threat of a battle group.
