Modern frigates and destroyers perform many of the peacetime cruising missions historically associated with cruisers. In this functional comparison, frigates serve as anti-submarine cruisers and destroyers as air-defence cruisers. Their presence and independent cruising duties help explain the comparison. The argument classifies ships by their work rather than by their current labels.
