Modern ship labels have moved with fleet roles. Destroyers now perform much of the ocean-going work once assigned to cruisers, and frigates also undertake independent escort and presence missions. Navies still need ships for dispersed peacetime cruising even when they no longer maintain large formal cruiser forces. The mission survives under smaller named categories, which makes strict historical terminology harder to sustain. Changing convention is acceptable while classifications remain logically connected to what ships do.
