Reading modern river-force structures

Modern river forces reveal how their states use the waterway: minesweepers point to economic protection, while more heavily armed craft suggest a frontier role.

Notes

Modern flotillas support mobilisation and strategic or tactical movement along a river, using landing craft, smaller boats, minesweepers and varying levels of armament. The river offers breadth of manoeuvre while constraining its depth and the directions in which boats can move. The amount invested in river forces gives an indication of a country's economic dependence on the route. A force dominated by minesweepers suggests that keeping commerce moving is a leading concern. A broader combat capability suggests the river also serves as a frontier requiring defence.
