Modern cruisers backed a very thin imperial footprint

Britain kept modern cruisers in the Far East despite European demands, while some nominal imperial possessions had little more than a medical officer ashore.

Notes

Three Town-class cruisers, HMS Norfolk, and HMS Enterprise placed a large share of Britain's modern cruiser strength in the region. Britain kept that commitment despite the Spanish Civil War and the growing danger in Europe. The ships visited scattered communities where the only permanent official might be the local doctor acting in several administrative roles. Some places experienced imperial power harshly, but others saw it mainly when a cruiser arrived. Naval mobility connected a political map whose day-to-day shore presence could be remarkably slight.
