Arm launchers for strike and reloadable VLS for air defence

A proposed large cruiser separates the timing requirements of strike missiles from rapid air-defence fire, then considers how VLS canisters could be reloaded at sea.

Notes

A modernized arm launcher is proposed for strike missiles because a planned attack need not launch every weapon in immediate succession. Missiles following different programmed routes can be timed to reach the target together, and modern automation could improve an older launcher's rate of fire. A launcher handling four missiles is suggested as one possible development. Vertical launch retains a stronger advantage for air defence, where saturation attacks demand rapid firing. Reloading those cells at sea would require enough internal space to store spare canisters and a stabilized arm to remove spent canisters and insert replacements in varying weather. The proposal envisages auxiliaries delivering canisters to the ship's magazine, with the transfer into launch cells handled onboard.
