Mobilisation Delay and the Lost Initiative

A viewer asks whether calling up reserves and regular forces cost Britain and France the international initiative.

Question

Did mobilisation delay cause Britain and France to lose the international initiative?

Short answer

A faster response might have helped politically, but the necessary force had been reduced after Korea and required significant reactivation.

Notes

A faster response might have shaped the political situation more favourably by setting the international tone before opposition hardened. Beginning with the narrower Musketeer Revised concept could also have shortened preparation compared with the more ambitious Alexandria plan. Post-Korean force reductions nevertheless meant ships had to leave reserve or mothball status and personnel had to be recalled. Some planning delay may have been avoidable, but rebuilding a credible expeditionary force still required time.
