Chapter · 34:30-39:28

Moving the fleet's aviation workshops to distant ports

Chartered merchant ships and aviation-support vessels could bring the equipment needed to establish a fleet base far from British industry.

Notes

Britain's main industrial support lay far from the likely theater of a war against Japan. Mobile-base schemes aimed to carry infrastructure into a port that lacked the facilities needed by the fleet. Chartered merchant ships would transport equipment and supplies to establish the base. An aviation-support ship could then move between the base and the carriers with spare aircraft and repair damaged machines. Pegasus took part in exercises as the aviation component of this improvised port system, helping establish and support seaplane operations.
