Why mixed crews change ship design and recruiting

Modern technical recruiting and mixed-gender crewing turn accommodation policy into an important part of warship design.

Notes

Segregated accommodation imposes a design cost because partitions and separate spaces shape the internal plan even when basic sanitary capacity remains similar. The same lesson applies to modern mixed-gender crews, which expand the recruiting pool as warship work depends increasingly on electronics, computers, communications, and data management. People able to supply those scarce skills are already limited, so excluding women could remove roughly half of the recruiting pool. Accommodation, bathrooms, and personnel routines need deliberate planning because integration changes the ship's physical layout as well as its administration.
