How the Deutschland report shaped the British response

Rawalpindi's understandable misidentification sent British cruisers hunting Deutschland even though Scharnhorst and Gneisenau were the ships at sea.

Notes

Wartime accounts and the initial sighting report identified the opponent as Deutschland because that was the threat British intelligence expected. The resulting cruiser hunt formed around the wrong German class while two much more powerful ships were actually present. A continued German advance might have forced Britain to divert battleships and produced an early pursuit resembling the later Bismarck operation. The episode shows how an accurate position report could still generate a response shaped by an inaccurate but reasonable identification.
