Why mission codes do not solve classification

Calling ships ASW or AAW vessels merely restates familiar specializations and still misses the peacetime presence work central to cruising.

Question

Should warships be named only by their principal role, such as ASW or AAW?

Short answer

No; that recreates the frigate-destroyer distinction and still omits the peacetime presence mission that defines cruising.

Notes

Role codes do not escape the existing naming problem. An anti-submarine-oriented combatant is usually called a frigate, an air-defence combatant a destroyer, and a general-purpose ship is left without a settled label. Those wartime specialties also fail to describe the diplomatic and presence work that occupies ships in peacetime. The cruiser question therefore remains tied to endurance, independent usefulness, and national representation rather than one combat code.
