The missing Town-class cruiser screen

Several Town-class cruisers could have matched Von Spee's light cruisers, removed Otranto's speed penalty, and divided German fire.

Notes

Glasgow was the only Town-class cruiser available even though the Royal Navy had been building the type in numbers. Three such cruisers could each have engaged one German light cruiser while allowing Cradock to leave the 18-knot Otranto on patrol or tripwire duties elsewhere. A faster British formation would have been better able to choose whether to close, withdraw, or wait for heavier reinforcement. During the battle, Glasgow remained operational despite the fire directed at her, which supports the argument that additional Towns could have placed real pressure on Leipzig, Dresden, and Nürnberg. Their success would also have forced Scharnhorst and Gneisenau to divert fire from Good Hope and Monmouth, showing how cruiser numbers and role balance can matter as much as adding one heavier ship.
