The cruiser gap behind the battleship spectacle

The absence of cruisers exposed a weakness in an American building program weighted toward battle-fleet prestige rather than routine global presence.

Notes

Cruisers were the ships normally used to maintain dispersed overseas presence, yet the Great White Fleet sailed without an accompanying cruiser force. A possible alternative would have had local cruiser squadrons join successive legs, bringing regional knowledge and displaying a more balanced navy. Those handoffs could have connected the traveling battle line with the stations that sustained everyday American presence. Without cruiser support, the battleships also depended on their secondary and tertiary armament for the voyage's other demands. The gap exposes the difference between assembling an impressive battle line and owning all the ship types needed for sustained global operations.
