Missile stocks and industrial replacement

Modern navies must match magazine size to industry's ability to replace missiles and torpedoes during a sustained war.

Notes

A single warship engaging 24 targets with two weapons apiece could expend 48 missiles in one action. Magazine depth therefore has to be compared with expected engagement rates and the industrial ability to replace what is fired. Torpedoes face the same constraint: modern weapons are complex, and the mass-production factories of the Second World War no longer stand ready at wartime scale. Current facilities can resemble cottage industries when measured against sustained combat demand. A navy designed around sophisticated munitions must plan for factory capacity, specialised labour, and replenishment time as carefully as it plans shipboard loadouts.
