Minsk's Vietnam visits exposed the limits of distant Soviet air cover

Minsk displayed Soviet support for Vietnam after the Sino-Vietnamese War, while operations far from Soviet airfields exposed the limits of her small air group.

Notes

The Sino-Soviet split divided states that shared communist systems, and the Sino-Vietnamese War gave Minsk's visits a direct diplomatic purpose. As a Pacific Fleet flagship, Minsk deployed with a task group, supported Soviet amphibious landings with a landing ship, and visited Vietnamese ports with facilities built using American money. Her conspicuous presence advertised Soviet support for Vietnam. The South China Sea deployments also put her limited air group far from Soviet shore-based aviation. Vietnam had just endured a major war, while relations with China included armed conflict, making regional support uncertain. These deployments probably encouraged interest in a carrier with stronger independent air power.
