Chapter ยท 36:04-38:04

Mining ships offer endurance but still need an industrial chain

Long-endurance mining vessels can recover raw resources, but ore transport, processing, spare parts, and limited accommodation remain constraints.

Notes

Commercial mining ships are among the few civilian vessels designed to remain far from home for long periods. Their machinery and endurance make them valuable for collecting water and minerals, but their hull volume is devoted to equipment and storage rather than refugees. Raw ore is also not immediately useful, so the fleet needs carriers, processing facilities, repair capacity, and a way to manufacture the materials and parts it consumes. Mining extends endurance only as part of a complete industrial chain.
