Designing a large mine-laying destroyer

A 7,500-ton destroyer design balances minelaying and escort duties with twelve 5-inch guns, long-range torpedoes, protection, stability, and weight limits.

Notes

The design begins with a clear role requirement: the new destroyer must serve as a minelayer and escort as well as a torpedo attacker. Hull dimensions, machinery, quarters, armament layout, armour, stability, and weight distribution all change as features are removed or reduced to keep the ship viable. The final design carries a heavy twelve-gun 5-inch battery, long-range torpedoes, small secondary weapons, autoloading, and mine equipment. The result shows how a large destroyer can become a multi-role flotilla asset, although doing so produces awkward proportions and leaves protection and weight tightly constrained.
