Mikasa embodied Japan's range and material advantages

Togo's flagship combined Pacific range, Krupp cemented armor, and a capable gun battery in a ship built for the theater where it fought.

Notes

Mikasa is presented as the crowning ship of Japan's six-six program and as the surviving British-built pre-dreadnought at the center of a naval museum. Her 9,000-nautical-mile cruising range suited Pacific operations, while Russian designs remained more European in endurance. Her Krupp cemented armor compared favorably with Harvey armor still appearing on newer Russian ships such as Oleg. Mikasa's main and secondary batteries were broadly comparable to those of the Borodino class. The contrast therefore lies less in headline gun counts than in range, materials, maintenance, and the fleet system employing the ship.
