Midway reversed the doctrine’s advantage

The doctrine required Japan to choose ground where it was strong and the enemy was weak; Midway did the opposite.

Question

Was Midway contrary to the original Kantai Kessen strategy?

Short answer

Yes. The doctrine aimed to make the enemy come into Japanese strength, not to seek battle under less favorable conditions.

Notes

Midway inverted that strategy. Kantai Kessen was supposed to make an enemy fleet travel into Japanese strength while distance and attrition reduced it. At Midway, Japan advanced outward and tried to seize the initiative near an American base whose defenders had intelligence about the operation. The Imperial Japanese Navy therefore surrendered much of the geographic and informational advantage its doctrine was meant to create. Midway was decisive, but it was fought through a sequence that reversed the original strategic logic.
