How should USS Midway be modernized if a crisis removes other American carriers?
Short answerThe panel rejects Midway's reactivation and proposes examining existing design work for a new conventionally powered CATOBAR carrier.
NotesMidway is rejected because extensive alterations for museum service make her a poor candidate for reactivation. The proposed alternative draws on BAE's conventional CATOBAR development of the Queen Elizabeth design for France. A roughly 70,000-ton carrier with gas-turbine integrated-electric propulsion and electromagnetic catapults would use existing design work to shorten preparation for construction. Increasing nuclear-carrier output would be difficult because of the specialised yard capacity required. The proposal assumes an extraordinary loss of American carrier capability and does not establish that either replacement route would solve the underlying crisis.
