Midway as bait after the island's capture

The force layout suggests Japan may have expected to seize Midway first and destroy the American counterattack only after the island became a fixed objective.

Notes

Capturing Midway would put Japanese forces closer to Hawaii, obstruct raids toward Japan, and establish a position the United States would be pressed to recapture. The comparison with a hypothetical Japanese occupation of Hawaii makes the strategic logic explicit: recovering a lost base could redirect American priorities, even at the expense of Europe-first strategy. One plausible reading of the Midway plan is that Japan expected to seize the island before the American fleet arrived. The Aleutian threat, estimates of limited U.S. carrier strength, and the placement of the submarine and amphibious forces all fit an expectation of a delayed response. An American recapture effort would then tie the fleet to a known location where Japan could attack it. This remains an interpretation of Japanese intentions.
