Why experienced personnel leave in their thirties

The 2023 retention argument links mid-career military departures to higher civilian pay, family stability, and competing demands on people's time.

Notes

Modern armed forces compete with civilian employers for capable people whose training and experience have become valuable. After a decade of service, personnel may want a stable home and time with a spouse or children. Civilian work can offer substantially higher pay, fewer restrictions on personal freedom, and the ability to remain in one place. These pressures help explain departures in the thirties despite an enjoyable early service career. Alex Clarke compares the pattern with his experience of volunteering, where participation is strongest among younger adults and people over sixty, with a much smaller middle-aged group. Political parties face a related difficulty when their supply of willing younger volunteers does not translate into enough experienced candidates in their thirties and forties. Family, career, and financial commitments reduce the pool available for all these roles.
