Michael Clapp's account of an unresolved Falklands press embargo

Clapp's recollection links his limited public response after the Falklands to an order whose origin and continuing authority remained unclear.

Notes

Michael Clapp recalled being ordered not to speak to the press during the Falklands campaign. In the passage read from his biography, he still considered himself bound by that instruction in 2021, unlike colleagues who had been released from it. He also recalled raising it with Fieldhouse after returning in July 1982 and finding that Fieldhouse knew nothing about the order. Clapp suggested that it had originated in the Ministry of Defence or passed through the task-force staff without Fieldhouse's knowledge. This is his explanation for remaining publicly silent despite accounts of the campaign that he disputed.
