Improvised leadership after the scatter order

A reserve officer's improvised northern passage shows how individual escorts still protected merchant ships after the convoy had dispersed.

Notes

Lieutenant Leo Gradwell of the trawler HMS Ayrshire lacked the charts expected for an independent northern passage and had no useful role with the withdrawing cruiser force. He instead led three merchant ships north and gradually brought them toward port. The group arranged tanks into a firing circle on deck and painted the ships white as improvised protection and camouflage. One retrospective alternative would have sent the convoy north under its commodore and senior corvette commander while detaching the destroyers to reinforce the cruisers. That recommendation depends partly on knowing Gradwell's improvised northern movement succeeded, knowledge Pound did not have. The episode preserves the agency of reserve officers and merchant crews after the scatter order while setting limits on retrospective judgement.
