Did ships of the line ever disguise themselves as East Indiamen, and did it work?
Short answerYes; both sides used the disguise to lure enemy convoy attackers toward unexpectedly powerful warships.
NotesBritish and French warships sometimes imitated East Indiamen to lure enemy convoy attackers into a trap. The deception could work because the apparent merchant target concealed a much more powerful opponent. A two-decker could carry off the disguise. Fourth rates were particularly suitable, since some East Indiamen were themselves converted into fourth rates, although third rates could also pass for merchantmen.
